Artist Statement

A few years ago I became obsessed with the idea of freedom - what it means, and how it shows up {or doesn't} inside me, in my life and in the world around me. It lies behind every painting, in one way or another.

Since moving to Cornwall in 2017 and taking up outdoor swimming, that idea has dropped from a mental concept {expressed largely through abstract landscape} into a more abstract expression of the visceral, ‘real time’ experience of the body. After a lifetime of often being tangled or trapped in my mind, I’m coming down into the spacious here and now of the physical senses.

The sights, sounds, smells, and sensations of our environment are not something we observe from a distance. We're right in the middle of it all, moment to moment. Each is layered with memory, perception, belief, thought, observation and presence, and the paintings seek to express those layered but fleeting moments of living with an emphasis on the way the body experiences them.

The process of making the paintings is a distillation of a multi-sensory experience. Liquid paint of varying consistencies is flung and poured, then layered with more considered, slower paced drawn elements to express how immersion in water is layered with physical sensation, thought, memory, ‘nowness’, and pleasure.  These are paintings to be inside, not to look at from a distant landscape perspective.

Mornings at the Pool

My regular swims in both the sea and an outdoor pool throughout 2018 were joyful lessons in the immediacy of sensation and letting physical experience bring me into the present to rediscover the peace and rich stillness to be found there. The paintings in this collection combine both fleeting glimpses of recognisable elements, and more abstract, ‘watery’ layers, that allow me to recount the experience in a kind of eclectic, expressive shorthand.
