Artist Statement

At its core, my work is about freedom, inside and out. As I evolve and change, the work reflects the different ways I’m relating to this underlying theme.

Since moving to Cornwall in 2017 and taking up outdoor swimming, freedom has dropped from a mental concept {expressed largely through abstract landscape} into a more abstract expression of the visceral, real time experience of the body.

The shift from the noise of the judging, thinking mind to a more sensory, less distanced relationship with the world through the body is opening up a new life for me. The paintings seek to express the fleeting but layered moments of living with an emphasis on the way the body experiences them.

I am increasingly working in 3D, using different media to suggest an environment that fleshes out these ideas of immersive experience.

Mornings at the Pool

My regular swims outdoors throughout 2018 were joyful lessons in the immediacy of sensation and letting physical experience bring me into the rich aliveness of the present.

The paintings in this collection are a distillation of this multi-sensory experience. Liquid, dynamic paint layers of varying consistencies are combined with fleeting, but more carefully drawn, glimpses of recognisable elements. Together they allow me to share in a kind of eclectic, expressive shorthand how immersion in water is layered with the ‘nowness’ of physical sensation, visuals, memory, and pleasure.
